about

In honour of the 100 year anniversary of Armistice Day, the track Remembrance follows the story of a mortally wounded serviceman scrambling through bodies and debris to find a final resting place.

lyrics

11 November 1918

The Serviceman knew that the shrapnel jutting out of his chest was killing him, it was only a matter of minutes, his medical training had taught him that much. As he lay staring at the smoke filled sky, an overwhelming compulsion filled him: he was not going to die here, amongst this horror. Summoning the last of his strength, The Serviceman manoeuvred himself on to his hands and knees and like a wounded dog scrambled over bodies, debris and the discarded weaponry of the fallen. The wind howled in his ears or was it the pulsing rushes of his lifeblood putting up one last futile display of courage? Faster and faster he crawled, lacerating his palms, the army issue trousers were no defence against the harsh earth, his knees now bloodied. In the distance The Serviceman saw the remnants of a shed and clear ground. As if possessed he rose to his feet and ran, each breath agony as his lung filled with blood, each exhalation accompanied by a fine red mist.

Reaching the shed, The Serviceman collapsed and propped himself up against the dilapidated structure. It was funny; he could have sworn that the sounds of battle had stopped. Convinced he was in some near death hallucination, he dared to dream that the sky had cleared from swampy grey-brown to a perfect azure blue, birdsong filled his ears and blood filled his lungs as The Serviceman slipped into peaceful, eternal slumber.
